Another meme

One of the library-related memes going around at the moment is the You as the Dewey Decimal System meme. So where do I fit?

Andrew Spencer’s Dewey Decimal Section:

405 Serial publications

Andrew Spencer = 1448539654358 = 144+853+965+435+8 = 2405

Class:
400 Language

Contains:
Linguistics and language books.

What it says about you:
You value communication, even with people who are different from you.  You like trying new things don’t mind being exposed to unfamiliar territory.  You get bored with routines that never change.

I guess this is a fairly true description of me. I’m certainly not afraid of jumping in and trying something new.

I thought it would be fun to try this name on some famous librarians and library-related folk. First up, the man the meme was named after, Melvil Dewey:

Melvil Dewey’s Dewey Decimal Section:

152 Perception, movement, emotions & drives

melvil dewey = 35229245355 = 352+292+453+55 = 1152

Class:
100 Philosophy & Psychology

Contains:
Books on metaphysics, logic, ethics and philosophy.

What it says about you:
You’re a careful thinker, but your life can be complicated and hard for others to understand at times. You try to explain things and strive to express yourself.

How about Casanova?:

Giacomo Casanova’s Dewey Decimal Section:

110 Metaphysics

Giacomo Casanova = 791353531914521 = 791+353+531+914+521 = 3110

Class:
100 Philosophy & Psychology

Contains:
Books on metaphysics, logic, ethics and philosophy.

Hmmm, looks like these two were fairly similar. Let’s try a female librarian, Barbara Gordon a.k.a. Batgirl:

Barbara Gordon’s Dewey Decimal Section:

460 Spanish & Portuguese languages

Barbara Gordon = 2182181758454 = 218+218+175+845+4 = 1460

Class:
400 Language

Contains:
Linguistics and language books.

What it says about you:
You value communication, even with people who are different from you. You like trying new things don’t mind being exposed to unfamiliar territory. You get bored with routines that never change.

According to her Wikipedia page, being multilingual wasn’t one of her superpowers.

Finally, I thought I’d finish with a librarian wannabe, Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones:

Keith Richards’s Dewey Decimal Section:

378 Higher education

Keith Richards = 1590889381849 = 159+088+938+184+9 = 1378

Class:
300 Social Sciences

Contains:
Books on politics, economics, education and the law.

What it says about you:
You are good at understanding people and finding the systems that work for them. You like having established reasoning behind your decisions. You consider it very important for your friends to always have your back.

Not so sure about that one. I wonder if anyone’s developed a similar meme for the Library of Congress Classification?

I like the idea of trying famous people with the meme – nice one. Barbara Gordon is one of our test / demo patrons for our library system – our way of trying to inject some fun into demos 🙂

Thanks Cathy, I thought it would something a bit different. I like the idea of using famous names during demos – I might try that at my next training session.
