For Christmas, the boys received a kids-sized garden bed kit, which we decided to set up as a veggie patch. Yesterday was the day it was assembled.
It was a bit of a “boys’ project”, as Mummy had headed off to the shops. With my helpers on hand, it didn’t take long to put the bed together.
It’s only about a metre long and half a metre wide, but it’s a good introduction to gardening for the boys. They’ve always been keen to help me out in the garden, so it’s nice for them to have their own little area to look after.
As well as the garden bed, there were some seeds included in the present – tomato, cucumber, carrot, capsicum, and rocket. These are vegetables that the boys eat, and it will be nice to be able to eat home-grown veggies.
Now all we have to do is cross our fingers that we get a crop or two coming up. If it doesn’t work, we can always buy some more seeds and try again. I went along to a meeting of the local permaculture group, and that was one of their main messages – keep trying if the first crop doesn’t work out. We haven’t gone down the full-on permaculture road yet, but it’s certainly something that we’re keeping in mind for any future expansion of our veggie patch.
